FSC and WWF promote certified wood products in China

FSC China, WWF China and the Japanese retail group Aeon recently co-hosted an event to promote sustainable consumption to consumers in China.

Six FSC-certified companies, including Kimberly Clark, SIG Combibloc and Tetra Pak, presented their paper and packaging products at the event. One of these, Sun Paper, a major Chinese paper producer, showed their newly certified photocopying paper and tissue brands.

The event also included an interactive education session designed to explain children the value of forests.

There are over 4,000 FSC chain of custody certificates in China. While these are mostly in the export sector, the continuous economic growth and ever-growing middle class mean that the domestic market for FSC-certified products is likely to expand in the future. China is also the largest producer and consumer of paper in the world, and demand is constantly rising.

In this context, the collaboration between FSC and China intends to encourage Chinese consumers to practice sustainable consumption in their daily lives starting from purchasing certified paper and wood products.

Jin Zhonghao, WWF’s Global Forest and Trade Network Program Director, commented: “We hope that consumers can recognize and accept sustainable forest products, so that we can transform the market and have the global forests responsibly managed.”
